i have got a lot of interesting scientific knowledge from the books of national geographic reading expeditions, some of which are about life, physics. i really can’t help losing myself in the colorful pictures and clear words in the books. after reading the books, i have been considering a question: what if we lived without science?

英文读后感(共10篇)

great changes have taken place in the world with the help of science. in the past, life was nasty, brutish and short. it is hard to imagine how our forefathers could do without so many conveniences that modern science brings about. back then, only a small group of people enjoyed the very few comforts. but the majority of people didn’t even have sufficient food, let along their privilege to be educated. anyway, it is science that changes the world and makes people’s life better and better, although it also leads to some bad aspects at the same time.

from the discovery of the gravity to the first step on the moon, we human beings have experienced a long process of developing science. and now, this process is still continuing much faster. new organisms are already being engineered, and new genetically modified crops promise benefits from higher yields and less use of harmful chemicals and so on. a lot of examples are showing this point. in the future, changes are likely to be even much greater as science reaches out to shape life itself. maybe one day, the possibility that life existed on mars billions of years ago will be potentially one of the greatest discoveries of our time. it is the force of the competition, we human beings’ inquiring mind and initiative that bring about the non-stopped development of science. therefore, it is difficult and impossible to prevent science from changing the world and our life as well.

at present, we are in two minds about science. on the one hand, we are enjoying the sweet life as a result of the evelopment of science, and expect it to continue. and we are showing our interests into some scientific expeditions, such as the astronomy, the alien civilization, etc. on the other hand, we are distrustful of it, due to the lack of understanding of science. some people thus far are still very superstitious, and they would even believe in superstitions rather than believe in science.

stephen hawking, one of the most remarkable scientists in the world, once said, “in a democratic society, the public needs to have a basic understanding of the science, so that it can make informed decisions and not leave them in the hands of experts.” this has reminded me of professor alan g. macdiarmid from america, the person who got the nobel prize for chemistry in the year of 2017. in his lecture at peking university this year, he put forward that science is people. he also expounded the importance of the basic science for the public. evidently, every one of us does need science, or we can’t live without it.

now that everyone needs science, why not take advantage of some means to give the public the right basic scientific knowledge? so when they face the problems such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect, nuclear weapons, environment destruction and some other problems, they can also make informed decisions on these subjects, just as what hawking said. one aspect relies on what is taught in schools. but science is often taught in an uninteresting way and most students just learn it by rote to pass examinations. however, the final goal of learning science is not to pass examinations or to get a higher score; instead, we should try to make full use of it to change our world and life. while learning, we should try to ask more questions and we should have the courage of suspecting the knowledge in the books, as some of the scientific conclusions are likely to be corrected in the future. who knows. so not only must we change our attitude towards science, but also the way of teaching and learning science.

in addition, science is always changing at a fast rate, and who we learn at school isn’t that sufficient to last a lifetime. so the mass media including tv, radio, newspaper, magazine and publishing company will play an important role in reporting the latest science in time. moreover, the mass media can also popularize basic science to the public, because only in this way will more people realize what on earth science is.

“scientists and engineers tend to express their ideas in the form of equations because they need to know the precise values of quantities. but for the rest of us, a qualitative grasp of scientific concepts is sufficient, and this can be conveyed by words and diagrams, without the use of equations”, said stephen hawking.

i agree with him very much, and, i’m fond of the wonderful words above, from stephen hawking.

for the development of science, are you ready?

The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if American Puritan society. The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.

The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. The punished woman. Hester Prynne and his husband. Who called himself Roger Chillingworth . He is an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester does not love him at all. Another man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time . It is sinful. Due to this,Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame.

In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.

When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will leave her er’s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able”.

But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. What’s worse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins.

After Mr. Dimmesdale’s death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil.

The two lovers has ever decided to flee to Europe, where they can live with their dauthter Pearl as a family feel a sense of release there. However, their plan fails…… When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The two share a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shining brightly.

英文读后感篇一:《雾都孤儿》400字

oliver twist, one of the most famous works of charles dickens', is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in britain in 18th century.

the author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in london.

the hero of this novel was oliver twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. he suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. while reading the tragic experiences of the little oliver, i was shocked by his sufferings. i felt for the poor boy, but at the same time i detested the evil fagin and the brutal bill. to my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and oliver lived a happy life in the end. one of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of mrs. maylie and rose and began a new life. he went for walks with them, or rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. he felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? the reason is the nature of goodness. i think it is the most important information implied in the novel by dickens—he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. although i don't think goodness is omnipotent, yet i do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

for me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. goodness is to humans what water is to fish. he who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. on the contrary, as the famous saying goes, 'the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose', he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. people receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

to my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. they look down on people's honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. as a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. on the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. in their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. if they cannot get profit from showing their'kindness', they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. they are one of the sorts that i really detest.

francis bacon said in his essay, 'goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.'

that is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. therefore, i, a kind person, want to tell those'vermin-to-be'to learn from the kind oliver and regain the nature of goodness.

英文读后感篇二:《小妇人》400字

little women

before i read this book, i had watched a cartoon movie made by japan. so i have a strong interest on it.

it all begins in the dead of winter; the christmas season. the coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. while her husband is off at war, marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: jo, meg, beth, and amy.

on christmas eve, marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls' father. the all gather together around the fire to read the letter. afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. marmee kisses them and they are off to bed.

jo is longing to become a writer. so, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. as morning comes she is the last one awake. the table is set, and food prepared for their christmas feast.

as dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out jo's play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. as they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window.

the 2 oldest girls: jo and meg, get ready to attend the christmas ball. while jo is curling meg's hair, there is a strange smell to the air. amy screams, megs hair is being singed. they continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves.

one of the prominent themes in little women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. during the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. one question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by alcott. if they aren't, what are alcott's views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story?

it is interesting to examine the last half of chapter 20, "confidential." jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with marmee of the situation between meg and mr. brooke. the possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. jo cannot understand why meg would want to stop behaving "like a sensible creature" (p.202), and refers to love as "such nonsense."

in tess of the d’urbervilles, hardy molded a pure, kindhearted image and rather an image brave enough to rebel, to shoulder the responsibility of her action. her unfortuneness was the tragedy of the society, her character and fate. it vividly revealed the persecution towards people after industrial revolution made by the conception of capitalism and traditional moral. following are some of my opinions about the causes to her death.

her character and parentage was part of the cause

in the author’s ideal world, tess was the embodiment of beauty and the incarnation of love represents all the merits of the villagers in her hometown: beautiful, pure, kind, simple, charitable and tolerant. to love ,she had no egocentric thoughts and didn’t plan to meet her vain wish by marriage standed by he dignity and pursue freedom y made the poor, helpless ,humble country girl as the ite she committed adultery and murder, hardy still claim she was a “pure girl”. this fully showed the author’s sympathy towards tess. hardy elaborately modeled the image of tess and indignantly describes the depression confronted with tess through her short life.

tess is a young woman who tends to find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. she is a victim, but she is also, at times, irresponsible. she falls asleep while taking the beehives to market, which ends up killing the family horse, prince she decides to visit the d’urbervilles in trantridge, giving rise to all her future woes, partly out of the guilt and responsibility she feels toward her family. she wants to make good, but in trying to help her family she loses sight of her own safety and her own wants and wishes. she becomes alec’s victim in the forest. she probably should have known not to put herself in such a situation, but she has few other options. here, it seems as though she is destined to rely on others, even when they are unreliable.

tess is also a strong woman throughout the novel. she stands up for herself and refuses to crumble under pressure. she chastises herself for her weakness after her sexual escapade with alec. if we agree with her claim that this indiscretion is a moment of weakness, we probably also feel that such weakness is not unlike that of most human beings. she is hard on herself for letting herself become a victim. at the burial of her child, sorrow , she weeps but collects herself and moves on as a stronger woman. overall, her determined attempts to escape her past primarily reflect her strength.

her parentage to some extent leaded to her final tragedy. born in a poor family, with an ignorant vain, drunkard father who did not care too much about the

She was seduced by a so-called gentleman—Alec, and from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence. People looked down on her and respected her no more. Actually she did nothing wrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of men. She was just a girl when she first met that terrible man.

She was forced by the gossips and the church to blame herself for this accident, so she thought she deserved nothing good. In order to get rid of the past she decided to go to a distant dairy farm but was still saying to herself that she was wrong. Maybe God didn’t agree with that, because the Lord gave her someone she loved with her whole heart and life—Angel Chare. Angel popped the question to her but she refused him without saying why. She said she loved him deeply and perhaps no one in the world could love him more than she did but she could not marry him for some unspoken reason. Angel wasn’t satisfied with this vague answer and did his best to win Tess. Somehow she agreed and they soon fixed the wedding day. Soon after their wedding Angel confessed the crime he committed to a woman long time ago and asked for Tess’s forgiveness. Tess was not at all angry and forgave Angel at once; in fact she was rather happy and excited for she also had things to confess.

She sat and told everything to Angel, hoping he would forgive her as he was forgiven but she was wrong. She was not forgiven, not as she thought she was. The woman pays.

Without Angel’s love, nothing meant anything to her. The result wasn’t important now. Tess was arrested for her murder of that so-called gentleman. Why? She still loved Angel and when he finally went back to her and asked for HER forgiveness, after he regretted what he had done unfair to Tess, she was desperate. That was too late—Alec had always told Tess that Angel would never come back so he won Tess’s trust. Unluckily Angel did come back and found Tess.! Everything was too late!

Tess was deceived and she lost Angel for the second time! The strengh of her love was so strong that she had forgotten the difference between right and wrong. Before that she had done nothing wrong but when she killed Alec, everything really changed! She became a criminal! How could it be? She was as pure and innocent as the good wife in the Bible. Her whole character was honest and faithful. Angel figured out at last that a person should be judged not only on what he has done but also on what he wanted to do!

Tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so she lost her innocence and that’s all! Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’s crime but HE was not blamed for it. Why it is always the woman who pays? Why they are always hurt? Why was Tess’s girlish purity lost? Why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? Why do the bad often ruin the good? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Women are too weak! Thousands of years of history have shown us that women have always been treated unfairly!

In old China there was a culture, which didn’t think of women as human beings. If you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, he would probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some elder sisters. If you asked why then he would say, “Ha, they are not included!”

People gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremely hard on girls.

Girls should be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuous and the most important thing was she must be a maiden! If her husband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl, a good wife no matter how she thought. If she wasn’t, then she would gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go near her. What about men? People did not care whether he was an experienced man or not, nor did they care about his character. They thought man equals power and power equals rights…

Now let’s not be so bitter. Nowadays women’s situations have become much better. Some are because of the change of society and some are because of civilization. Just let those poor painful women like TESS be just a memory.

this is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. the story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.

it seems to me that many readers' english reading experience starts with jane eyer. i am of no exception. as we refer to the movie “jane eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally.

jane eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. since jane's education in lowwood orphanage began, she didn't get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. the suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything a reward of revolting the ruthless oppression, jane got a chance to be a tutor in thornfield garden. there she made the acquaintance of lovely adele and that garden's owner, rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: after jane and rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn't want to betray her own principles, because she was jane eyer. the film has finally got a symbolist end: jane inherited a large number of legacies and finally returned. after finding rochester's misfortune brought by his original mad wife, jane chose to stay with him forever.

i don't know what others feel, but frankly speaking, i would rather regard the section that jane began her teaching job in thornfield as the film's end----especially when i heard jane's words “never in my life have i been awaken so happily.” for one thing, this ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; for another, this should be what the audiences with my views hoped her to get. but the professional judgment of producing films reminded me to wait for a totally different result: there must be something wrong coming with the excellence----perhaps not only should another section be added to enrich the story, but also we may see from the next transition of jane's life that “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.”

what's more, this film didn't end when jane left thornfield. for jane eyer herself, there should always be somewhere to realize her great ideal of being independent considering her fortitude, but for rochester, how he can get salvation? the film gives the answer tentatively: jane eventually got back to rochester. in fact, when jane met rochester for the first time, she scared his horse and made his heel strained, to a certain extent, which meant rochester would get retrieval because of jane. we can consider rochester's experiences as that of religion meaning. the fire by his frantic wife was the punishment for the cynicism early in his life. after it, rochester got the mercy of the god and the love of the woman whom he loved. here we can say: human nature and divinity get united perfectly in order to let such a story accord with the requirements of both two sides. the value of this film may be due to its efforts to explore a new way for the development of humanism under the faith of religion.

life is ceaselessly changing, but our living principles remain. firmly persisting for the rights of being independent gives us enough confidence and courage, which is like the beacon over the capriccioso sea of life. in the world of the film, we have found the stories of ourselves, which makes us so concerned about the fate of the dramatis personae.

in this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both physical and mental effects on us call for a balance. we are likely to find ourselves bogged down in the sargasso sea of information overload and living unconsciousness. it's our spirit that makes the life meaningful.

heart is the engine of body, brain is the resource of thought, and great films are the mirrors of life. indubitably, “jane eyer” is one of them.

charlotte bronte's jane eyre

jane eyre was published in 1847 under the androgynous pseudonym of “currer bell.” the publication was followed by widespread success. utilizing two literary traditions, the bildungsroman and the gothic novel, jane eyre is a powerful narrative with profound themes concerning genders, family, passion, and identity. it is unambiguously one of the most celebrated novels in british literature.

born in 1816, charlotte bronte was the third daughter of patrick bronte, an ambitious and intelligent clergyman. according to newsman, all the bronte children were unusually precocious and almost ferociously intelligent, and their informal and unorthodox educations under their father's tutelage nurtured these traits. patrick bronte shared his interests in literature with his children, toward whom he behaved as though they were his intellectual equals. the bronte children read voraciously. charlotte's imagination was especially fired by the poetry of byron, whose brooding heroes served as the prototypes for characters in the bronte's juvenile writings as well as for such figures as mr. rochester in jane eyre 。 bronte's formal education was limited and sporadic – ten months at the age of 8 at cowan bridge clergy daughters' school , eighteen months from the age of 14 at roe head school of miss margaret wooler 。 according to newman, bronte then worked as a teacher at roe head for three years before going to work as a governess. seeking an alternative way of earning money, charlotte bronte went to brussels in 1842 to study french and german at the pensionnat heger, preparing herself to open a school at the parsonage. she seems to have fallen in love with her charismatic teacher, constantin heger. the experience seems on a probable source for a recurrent feature in bronte's fiction: “relationships in which the inflammatory spark of intellectual energy ignites an erotic attraction between a woman and a more socially powerful man” 。 the brontes' efforts to establish a school at the parsonage never got off the ground. still seeking ways to make money, charlotte published, with her sisters, the unsuccessful poems by currer, ellis, and acton bell. her first effort to publish a novel, the professor, was also unsuccessful. jane eyre, published in october 1847, however, was met with great enthusiasm and became one of the best sellers. as “currer bell” bronte completed two more novels, shirley and villette. she married reverend william bell nicholls in 1854 and died nine months later, at the age of thirty-nine in 1855 。

the story of jane eyre takes place in northern england in the early to mid-19th century. it starts as the ten-year-old jane, a plain but unyielding child, is excluded by her aunt reed from the domestic circle around the hearth and bullied by her handsome but unpleasant cousins. under the suggestion of mr. lloyd, an apothecary that sympathizes jane, mrs. reed sends jane to lowood institution operated by a hypocritical evangelicalist, mr. brocklehurst, who chastises jane in front of the class and calls her a liar. at lowood, jane befriends with helen burns, who helps the newly arrived jane adjust to the austere environment; she is also taken under the wing of the superintendent, miss temple. one spring, many students catch typhus due to the harsh condition. helen dies of consumption. at the end of her studies jane is retained as a teacher. when jane grows weary of her life at lowood, she advertises for a position as governess and is engaged by mrs. fairfax, housekeeper at thronfield, for a little girl, adele varens. after much waiting, jane meets her employer, edward rochester, somber, moody, quick to change in his manner, and brusque in his speech. mysterious happenings occur at thronfield, including demonic laugh emanating from the third-story attic and a fire set in rochester's bedroom one night. rochester attributes all the oddities to grace poole, the seamstress. meanwhile, jane develops an attraction for rochester. rochester, however, often flirts with the idea of marrying miss ingram. an old acquaintance of rochester's, richard mason, visits thornfield and is severely injured from an attack apparently from grace. jane returns to gateshead for a while to see the dying mrs. reed. when she returns to thornfield, rochester asks jane to marry him. jane accepts, but during the wedding, mason and a solicitor interrupt the ceremony by revealing that rochester is keeping his lunatic wife, bertha mason, in the attic in thornfield. despite rochester's confession, jane leaves thornfield. she arrives at the desolate crossroads of whitcross and runs into the rivers siblings, who tend her in moor house. jane happily accepts the offer of teaching at st. john's school.

today, i was read the book which called “the adventures of tom sawyer.” this story is about a clever boy called tom sawyer.

this book describes the nineteenth century, the mississippi river in a small town people's lives, it can be said at the time the united states are a microcosm of social life. small characters tom sawyer and his junior partner and seriously childish words and deeds can give us deep insight. they hate priests pack of lies, and do not like boring school of education and decently adults, and children a rival show. they smart and lively , integrity and courage, especially in some major events happened when, in a battle between justice and evil, in the moment of crisis comes, they will not hesitate to come forward.

i think tom sawyer is a brave boy. he always gives his friends courage in danger and he tries his best to help other people.

of course we know, tom is a very naughty boy, and his aunt polly is often angry with him. but i think he also is a good boy. he always can make other people happy.

people always grow, besides height, body has grown stronger, and people’s thoughts are long. your view on the world is different, sensible, and no longer childish. but people are getting better. don't like the adventures of the ruthless villains, and his quest do bad, people see people hate. but at last he still las toman, got a starved to death in the cave.

after reading the "adventures of tom sawyer," i really envy tom to have such an interesting experience. it seems this book with relish, and even sleepless nights.

in my heart, i respect tom. maybe he is a hero. and i think i should learn something from tom sawyer.

santiago, an old man about sixty years old, fished alone with nothing caught in eighty four days. no one would like to talk to him for his extremely bad luck except a boy who always came to help after the day and finally left to another boat under the pressure of his parents. ignoring the contempt from the younger fishermen and sympathy from the older, on the morning of the 85th day, the old man started his fishing with determination and rowed his old boat very far in the sea where he believed there would be big fish. fortunately the old man met with a big fish as he had wished and finally defeated the big marlin with two days and nights struggle after overcoming great difficulties. but more unfortunately there were many sharks coming after his boat attracted by the smell of the blood of the big marlin. after death-and-life struggle, when he finally got rid of the sharks coming after the boat, the big marlin was bare skeleton.

the old man and the sea tells a frustrated experience of the old man who fishes alone in the sea in plain languages. through the simple lines, a “tough guy” image is shaped and heroism is praised. the whole story starts with a peaceful beginning which is some trivial of life and talking with the boy, and suddenly turns to its climax which is the dangerous fighting with the big fish and sharks alone in the sea, and ends with the old man’s return with the bare skeleton of the big marlin. though the boy only appears at the beginning and the ending in the novel, he plays an indispensible role, it is his inspiring and supporting that helps the old man to be “graceful under heavy pressure”.

in the book, the old man prepared his fishing properly and preciously than any other fishermen so that “then when luck comes you are ready” as the old man thought to himself. in reality, some of us keep complaining that they are born in wrong time or good luck never knocks their doors. in fact, good luck sometimes just comes when they are not ready. taking newton for example, if he had not acquired a lot, millions of apples could never make him discovery the gravity. so if we just keep studying as much as we can, good luck will finally find us and a bright future is ahead of us. the old man never gives up hope. when all of people think he is doomed, he still strongly believes that he will get a big fish. and he does. so never giving up hope is very important to us. this reminded me of the sentence in churchill’s speech “never give up, never, never, never…”. “but man is not made for defeat. a man can be destroyed but not defeated” has always been inspiring me when i counter with some setbacks in my life. setbacks are inevitable in pursuit of our goals, but we should never be frustrated and should be “graceful under heavy pressure” like the old man. it is his relentless pursuit that contributes to the victory.

英语暑假读后感:《星际动物园》英文读后感

as the only living things on a bare planet called “just like home”, humans felt lonely and sad. in order to live, they must get married as often as possible and have children. unwilling to get married, our 16-year-old protagonist named humming bird ran away from her planet and found a plastic space ship. there she met various kinds of animals, which frightened her even drove her crazy. she had never seen such things before. only through ‘the book of remembering’ did she get some rough idea of animals. after she took a small-copied cat home and showed it to the officials on her planet, the cat was shot to death and all the officials went crazy. humming brid didn’t give up her attempt to let people accept the animals. she decided to set about the job from children…

that’s the brief plot of harry gilbert’s science fiction—. based on the reality of increasing environmental problems, the writer uses his full imagination and creativity to produce this vivid imaginative and thought-provoking story.

as far as we know, animal numbers are now diminishing all over the world every years, and the living conditions we depend on a getting worse. we dirty the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other substances and damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. we also pollute our surroundings in many other ways. air, water and soil are all very important and necessary to the survival of all living things all over the world. if we human don’t pay more attention to that, there will come a day when we have to live the kind of life described in this novel. as we know, the world is made up not only of human beings but also a lot of other living things. if we don’t want to leave this perfect planet, we have to protect the environment; otherwise, without the company of other living things, people would only be half-alive, men only half-men.

nowadays, i should say, people have realized the importance of environmental protection and ecological balance. slogans that remind us to save water and electricity are stuck everywhere, but how many are treated as requirements or duties and not just a piece of paper. if we pay a little attention to our working and study places, we always find some taps half opened with running water, and large numbers of people get used to leave lights on during the day. dustbins for both recycled and unredeemable rubbish are placed in high density but no one bothers to throw the rubbish into the right dustbins. nor do they even know what kind of rubbish could be recycled and what kind could not.

conservation centers for protecting animals are built in many countries. our government also passed some acts to protect animals; however, there do exist some law-breakers who are driven by money. we plant trees very year, but no one bothers to water and care for them after planting them. for money, some farmers drive their sheep and cattle to grasslands and charge it into desert.

all in all, to every one, i want to say, “living on this wonderful planet earth, we are lucky and happy. in order to enjoy this kind of wonderful life, we must care for mother earth and put this kind of care into practice.”

facing the world, to be or not to be, it’s up to you. we must make a choice without any hesitation!
